As we head into 2017 many people will review their lifestyle. The start of a new year is always a time for resolutions and enthusiasm to better yourself. No matter what your own goals are, there are some steps you can take to give you the best chance of achieving them.
So whether it is to lose weight, exercise more, stop smoking or be a better person, try and use these six steps to enjoy life more.
Take a real honest look at where you are with each goal you have set. It is important to know where you started from, to gauge how far you have travelled. You need to get your baseline right, so if your goal is to lose weight, be fitter or generally be healthier and happier look at completing a health risk assessment.
Once you have assessed where you are, you need to look at the implications of achieving your goals. Will it be easier or harder than you originally thought? Remember your goals should be SMART:- Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely, so don’t take on more than you can cope with as you will invariably give up after a short time.
Once realistic goals have been set, you need to develop a plan for realising your objectives. Do you need to educate yourself more to ensure you are properly equipped to meet your targets? Do you need some help from an expert or coach or even a support group?
Set yourself milestones along the way to hit and ensure that you reward yourself when you have met those targets. This ensures that you keep track of your progress and your goal is not put on the long finger. So set yourself a monthly target and if you reach it treat yourself to something that is special to you, a meal with a loved one, a family day out or even that new pair of shoes!
The first month is always the hardest if you are trying to introduce a positive lifestyle change. Look to ensure that you build these new habits into your life so that you don’t fall back into your old ways. A diet can be a fad but smart eating is a healthy lifestyle choice.
What we measure, we manage and what we manage we improve. Keep a log of how you are getting on to track your progress. Are you on target to reaching your milestones? Have you hit your target? Are you ready to set a new goal?
No matter what you set out to do these steps can help you become a healthier, happier person.
